News at a Glance
Hertfordshire Councils Submit Joint Response on Local Government Reform

Hertfordshire’s 11 district and borough councils, the County Council, and the Police and Crime Commissioner have submitted a joint interim response to the Government outlining initial options for reorganising local government in the county.
The move follows a Government request in February for all two-tier areas to explore shifting to a unitary authority model, where a single council would deliver all services currently split between county and district levels.
The submission presents several options—ranging from one to four unitary councils—while focusing on protecting vital services, improving efficiency, and maintaining strong links to communities. No decisions have been made, and further analysis and public engagement will follow ahead of a final submission in November.

Hertfordshire’s Young Stars Dazzle at Royal Albert Hall Gala

Last night, the prestigious Royal Albert Hall echoed with the voices, music, and energy of young performers from across Hertfordshire as they took part in the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala 2025. It was a breathtaking experience for the children and young people involved—and a moment of immense pride for their families in the audience.
The event, held on Sunday 23 March, marked the 30th anniversary of the Gala at the Royal Albert Hall, presented by Hertfordshire Music Service. This year’s theme, “For the Record”, celebrated the power of music across generations, exploring how people—especially young people—connect with sound, rhythm, and expression.
Parents began the day by dropping off their children just before 3PM, before eagerly taking their seats at 7PM for a night of unforgettable performances. The Gala was a grand showcase of talent, collaboration, and creativity.
The programme featured a massive choir of primary and secondary school pupils, alongside the Hertfordshire County Youth Choir, Hertfordshire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, and the HMS Steel Orchestra. The event also included vibrant instrumental and dance performances by local secondary schools, and featured winners of the Gala Songwriter and Rapper competitions.
Musical highlights included:
“When I Grow Up” from Matilda the Musical
“Make Your Own Kind of Music” by Cass Elliot
“Believer” by Imagine Dragons
A powerful finale performance of “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham, featuring full choir, orchestra, steel pans, drummers, and dancers
Importantly, this year’s event was shaped with input from the 2025 Gala Youth Focus Group, ensuring that the voices of young people were at the heart of the planning and musical choices.
The Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala 2025 was not just a concert—it was a celebration of youth, creativity, and community spirit, leaving both performers and their families with memories to last a lifetime.
Household Support Fund Extended to March 2026
Hertfordshire County Council has welcomed the government’s extension of the Household Support Fund (HSF) until March 2026. The fund, launched in October 2021, helps residents facing rising living costs.
Councillor Richard Roberts, Council Leader, praised the decision, emphasising the need for long-term solutions to support residents. The council will soon outline plans to allocate the fund, working with local authorities and community organisations to ensure targeted assistance.
Residents can find support details, including the Welfare Assistance Scheme, at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/costofliving. For further help, contact HertsHelp at www.hertshelp.net or call 0300 123 4044.
The extension highlights the council’s ongoing efforts to address financial challenges in the community.
