County Council Updates

March Deadline Looms as Hertfordshire Leaders Face Local Government Reform Decisions

Local leaders across Hertfordshire are facing a critical month as they prepare to submit their interim proposals for local government reform by March 21, 2025. These reforms, aimed at replacing the current two-tier system of county and district councils with larger unitary authorities, have sparked concerns over local accountability and financial impact.

While Hertfordshire County Council and district leaders have voiced reservations, they are still expected to submit restructuring plans as required by the government. The big question remains: How will the county be divided? Will districts merge to form larger unitary authorities, or will each district seek independence?

So far, residents have not been consulted, leaving many wondering about the shape of their future local government. Will Broxbourne, East Herts, and Welwyn Hatfield merge? Could St Albans or Dacorum go it alone? The answers remain uncertain.

As these discussions unfold, we will be watching closely and aim to bring you the first look at Hertfordshire’s early proposals as they emerge. Stay tuned for updates.

Hertfordshire County Council’s £200k Exit Package Sparks Scrutiny

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that a former staff member received an exit package of £203,216 in the 2023-24 financial year. The departure was mutually agreed, rather than a compulsory redundancy.

In total, 130 employees left HCC during this period, with exit packages totaling £1.54 million, averaging £11,879 per person. The council stated that such payments are assessed individually and must demonstrate a financial benefit.

The payout, approved by a cross-party group of councillors, has raised questions over council spending and how such decisions are made. Click on the button for more information as reported.

Hertfordshire Marks Five Years Since COVID-19 Pandemic

This weekend, Hertfordshire County Council and districts across the county joined the nation in reflecting on the fifth anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. County Hall was lit up yellow in remembrance, while local districts held their own tributes.

In Dacorum, a memorial garden in Gadebridge Park, featuring a red-leaf Copper Beech tree and wildflowers, offers a peaceful space for reflection. North Herts honoured the day by remembering those lost, including former councillor Paul Clark, and celebrating the community’s resilience.

Watford’s Deputy Mayor laid a wreath at the Ring of Reflection in Cassiobury Park, joined by community leaders, while St Albans encouraged residents to participate in the national Day of Reflection.

The day served as a poignant reminder of the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the unity that carried communities through an unprecedented time.

Districts Celebrate International Women’s Day 2025

This International Women’s Day, districts across Hertfordshire embraced the theme AccelerateAction to promote gender equality and celebrate women’s achievements.

In North Herts, the council highlighted its progress, including four out of seven service directors now being women, achieving White Ribbon accreditation, and launching the Women and Girls Safety Charter. The council also encouraged more women to stand as councillors, with 22 currently serving.

Watford reaffirmed its commitment to ending violence against women and girls, having received White Ribbon UK accreditation. The council urged anyone concerned about safety to seek help, emphasizing that no one is alone.

Both districts showcased their dedication to fostering inclusion, safety, and empowerment for women, marking IWD 2025 with meaningful action and reflection.

Electric Shuttle Buses Launch in Hertfordshire

Uno has introduced its first five zero-emission electric buses on the new Electric Shuttle, running between University of Hertfordshire campuses and the Hatfield park and ride.

Backed by Hertfordshire County Council, the DfT, and ZEBRA funding, the project will roll out 27 buses by April 2026. Designed for comfort and efficiency, each bus carries 93 passengers and runs 300 miles per charge.

This marks a major step toward cleaner air and sustainable transport for Hertfordshire residents. 🚍⚡

New Book Showcases Hertfordshire’s Historic Churches

A new book celebrating Hertfordshire’s historic churches has been released, highlighting their architectural beauty and cultural significance. The publication delves into the rich history of local churches, shedding light on their role in shaping communities over the centuries.

This initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage preservation of these treasured landmarks for future generations. A must-read for history and architecture enthusiasts! 📖⛪
